GTA 6 runs on Rockstar's own RAGE engine — not Unreal Engine 5. The trailers, shown running in-engine, already showcase a major leap in lighting, detail and realism.

What engine does GTA 6 use?

Grand Theft Auto VI is built on Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), the same in-house technology behind GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 — now significantly evolved. Despite common searches, it does not use Unreal Engine 5; Rockstar builds its open worlds on its own engine.

What to expect from the graphics

  • Dramatically improved lighting, weather and water effects.
  • Dense, detailed crowds and traffic that show off current-gen hardware.
  • Realistic physics and animation that build on Red Dead Redemption 2.

Will GTA 6 support 4K and high frame rates?

On current-gen consoles, expect modes targeting higher resolution or smoother performance. True 4K and high frame rates will mainly depend on the eventual PC version and your hardware. 8K is unrealistic for most setups at launch.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 made in Unreal Engine 5?

No. GTA 6 uses Rockstar's own RAGE engine, the technology behind GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Will GTA 6 run in 4K?

Current-gen consoles will likely offer higher-resolution modes, and 4K will be most achievable on capable PCs once the PC version arrives.
